Marta Becker of Vancouver says she had a complication-free pregnancy and home birth at 44 years old.

Before her unexpected pregnancy, Ms. Becker says, she was absorbed by her career and rarely gave motherhood much thought.

The birth of a son almost 10 months ago altered the course of her life, as well as her relationship with a man 11 years younger, she says.

Although they were happy together, they had no long-term commitment, so the pregnancy definitely made a big impact.

Her partner, a full-time student, was stunned by the news, she adds, but he quickly adjusted to fatherhood after the baby was born. He's crazy in love with this kid.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
