Mothers who beat the clock - Mary Shearing

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, April 01, 2017 | 0 comments

Image: Mothers who beat the clockIt seemed best to start with a woman who had lived with the stigma for the longest time, Mary Shearing, 70, a Californian, and her 16-year-old twins Kelly and Amy.

Mary was one of the first post-menopausal women to have IVF, but although critics warned she was cheating nature and would never keep up with her girls' interests, it didn’t work out that way.

Mary spends an hour in the gym every morning and water-skis regularly. It's only now, with the girls almost grown up, that their mother's age is starting to worry them.

Our connection is fantastic — much better than with my first kids. I think they would have been better off if I'd been a little bit more mature. I had my first child when I was 19 and that was just too young.

They are a loving family: indeed, it's all but impossible to disapprove of Mary's decision to have IVF at 53.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
