She got pregnant, had a baby at 47/48

I just heard yesterday, of a friend of a friend who was beginning to go through menopause, and got pregnant and had a baby at 47 or 48.

As Christiane Northrup says (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), there's a reason doctors remind women to STAY ON BIRTH CONTROL until they haven't had a period for a year (i.e. gone into full menopause) -- They could get pregnant!

I believe when that book, The Feminine Mystique, was written in the 1960s, there were still lots of people fertile well into their 40's.

In the 1960s, my grandmother was having a child at age 45, and it wasn't considered unusual. Many women her age were still having kids.

Birthrate for 2005:
"Childbearing by women in their thirties and forties continued to increase. The birth rate for women 40–44 years also rose by 2 percent, to 9.1, the highest rate since 1968, and the rate for women aged 45–49 years increased slightly, to 0.6 births per 1,000 women, the first increase in the rate since 2000 and the highest rate for this age group since 1970.”

I am due May 10/07 with baby #6 for me. I'm 45 - conceived naturally. I'll be one week short of 46 at delivery, if she makes it to term (not likely as she's already measuring big!).

The statistics we hear about can be terrifying but there are plenty of women who give birth to healthy babies, well into their 40's, as this board has proven.

I personally know of a woman who became pregnant with #5 at 48, her first son! He's absolutely perfect.
