Just gave birth to a girl at 44

Hi, for those who don't know me - I'm an older mom, 44, just gave birth to a girl this October. She is wonderful, and such a joy.

I must say I wasn't very happy about being pregnant at 49. We had just moved into a new home about 18 months ago, with plans of only finishing raising the 16 year old still at home. No plans for a nursery.

More plans of working really hard for the next 10 years, and paying it off. My husband was even less excited about it. We've been married for 28 years, so it's not even a second family for either of us. I guess had I not just spent the last 14 years living with one or more teenagers, I might have been a little happier about it.

But God has a plan, and even though I can't see what it is, I know this little boy is a part of it. It was scary at first, knowing all the things that can go wrong at this age. I don't recall worrying so much about it when I was younger. I think when you're young, you haven't seen as much and just assume it always goes as planned.

I have many friends and they have been great for moral support, and have been so generous with the gifts. We haven't had to buy a thing for him. We have enough diapers, clothes, and entertainment toys to last most of the first year. Someone even gave me a crib.

I had just gotten rid of mine when we moved. I debated about keeping it for grandkids, but decided I keep too much clutter and let it go in a garage sale, only to be pregnant, less than a year later.

As far as the Grandma remarks, I'm ready for them. The first public place I took him this week, the cashier was oohing and ahing, then she asked me if I was keeping him for the day? I know it will come up quite often.

I too heard about somebody getting twins when she was 49. My OB/gyn said it was possible until approximately 50, depending on the person. I guess it does not happen a lot, because most people of that age don’t want babies anymore, but if they would try there might be more.

You said the doctor said the oldest to have a baby was 48, well I'm 49 and just had a healthy baby boy 2 weeks ago today. I wasn't trying to get pregnant, I actually thought I was too old, it just happened.

My oldest is 27, then 25,16 and 2 weeks. When I found myself pregnant, I went looking for others near my age and I can tell you there aren't many. I've been on the www.whattoexpect.com site and found quite a few in their 40's, but I am the oldest on that forum at 49.

Someone responded to a survey being 52, but never actually admitted who they were. There's also a 52 year old woman in my area, expecting twins. I haven't heard an update lately, but last I heard she was doing OK.

Just wanted to share that I ran into a woman at the Reproductive immunologist's office who had just given birth two weeks ago, and was 46 years old!!! She had IVF [in vitro fertilization] believe it or not!! This was her 2nd try. Her first child was born with IVF when she was 41. She didn't have high FSH, but thought you guys would like to hear this story!!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

Hi, I am 8 1/2 weeks pregnant naturally (6 1/2 gestational) for the first time at 44 years old. I have never tried to get pregnant in the past (late bloomer). At what point should I do the first prental appointment? I want to wait until 10 weeks, so at least the heartbeat can be detected by then and my miscarriage risk is reduced some. I'm afraid to go to the doctor now and to be told it's too early and I might misscarry even though I have no history of pregnancies (due to prevention). I'm in great health with no risk factors except age. I plan to skip screening tests and do the amnio for a more definative answer. Am I right to wait until 10weeks? My health habits are great with meals, prenatal vitamins, exercise, no smoking, alcohol or caffeine. I just don't want the uncessesary lectures I hear are so common. Any reason I should go in right away? I've had 5 home pregnancy tests (had a bulk pack of them). All positive. I figured out I was pregnant at just 3 weeks gestational.

  2. Congratulations! How wonderful!

Many drs don't see their prenatal patients till 10-12 weeks anyhow, so waiting shouldn't be a problem, as long as there are no other health concerns and you are talking your prenatal vitamins and folic acid.

However, two reasons I can think of for going in earlier. Some women over 40 have low progesterone & need testing & supplimentation.

The other, is if the dr you really want, gets booked up early for deliveries. You might just call and see how your dr usually handles it.
