I turned out to be pregnant at 47

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Saturday, January 26, 2008 | 1 comments

Hi, I am Erna, 48 years old. Travelling used to be my passion and I never found time to settle down. Finally, at the age of 40, I meet my husband and found piece of mind. Neither of us had been married before or had children. We briefly thought about having children, but dismissed the thought by thinking we were too old anyway.

After all, you did not hear or read a lot about women who became mother after 40, the whole society is focused on younger mothers. Anyway, to our great surprise I turned out to be pregnant at the age of 47, I only found out after about 2 months.

I had the luck that I was seeing a great doctor and he gave me lot of confidence. After 42 weeks labour started naturally, and a beautiful healthy baby boy was born. I never dreamed that a child could give such joy to your life, and now I sometimes regret that I did not go for it earlier. But that is life, you take it as it comes. It is no guarantee that you would have been happier if you had acted differently.

My son is 1 and half years old now, and I still enjoy every day!

I am from Amsterdam, Netherlands.

I was away for summer holidays the last few weeks, and last night at dinner my sister-in-law said her best friend, aged 46, had a surprise baby after TTC [trying to conceive] for 7 years. Thought she was having menopausal symptoms. She had a healthy boy! Wow, I'm motivated.

The other thing that I thought be "in my favour" was some family medical history - I have a couple of female cousins who had successful pregnancies ( both were "oops"), and healthy babies in their 40's. One cousin was 48 when her daughter was born.

My doctor is in her 50's, has 6 year old twins, naturally. She wasn't even TTC [trying to conceive]. She said she ovulated the day before her period. She also said that at our age, we can spit out eggs at random, and not even show we ovulated on our charts.

She has seen it happen several times. A really hot night of BD'ing [baby dancing - s*x] can cause us to ovulate. Don't give up. I would continue with acupuncture and herbs, and one of these times you will catch the golden egg.

I want you to know that my cousin had never had a baby, and at age 45 she got pregnant, and delivered a healthy baby girl at age 46 naturally. Don't give up.

Catherine

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.

I am 47 and 9 weeks preg. Assuming there are no problems, I will give birth at age 48! I met my husb when I was 40 and had two miscarriages at 43 at 7 weeks with low HCG levels. I assumed that was our last shot and have had perimenopausal symptoms for the past year or two. The odds of conceiving over 45 are supposedly astronomical so this came as a big shock! So far HCG level is 100,000+ and fetus appears 'normal' at this stage and has heartbeat. I had been using low dose of Progesterone creme for about one week every cycle in the past year and 1/2, perhaps that had something to do with it? Still hard to believe w/my hair turning grey and eyesight failing!! ha! But I have exercised regularly for many many years, am vegetarian so I suppose I am in good shape for my advanced age (lol). Anyway, it is truly miraculous and we are waiting to see what will happen and hoping the baby is healthy- will do amnio in a few weeks and are now just taking it one day at a time.
