Pregnancy and fertility in older women - This article discusses the case of a 54-year old woman who stopped taking oral contraceptives at age 52 on the advice of her doctor. A regular cycle developed but after a few months amenorrhoea occurred lasting 3 months, followed by a period of about 4 months with irregular bleeding.

At first she believed the menopause had taken place but she developed morning sickness and tightness in the breasts and presented to her gynaecologist with the belief that she was pregnant. It was a molar pregnancy.

Statistics on pregnancy in women older than 50 are sketchy, and only about 1 birth in 75,000 occurs to women in that age group.

I don't know what her FSH was, but a friend of mine was successful on her 4th IUI at the age of 44 (first time pregnancy). The first three, she took no meds and the last one she took Clomid but her RE [reproductive endocrinologist] doesn't think Clomid was the factor.

She said that she kept in her mind that since she had a 10% chance every month, the odds that she would succeed within a year was good.

I wanted to add us to the list: Gave birth in April 2006 to a healthy baby boy at the age of 43, four months before my 44th birthday.

If you have good egg reserve, clear ovulation patterns and good timing, and there are no other obvious problems, you may just have to be patient and wait for the good egg.
