Türkan Katıçelik, who resides in Germany, gave birth to a baby girl at the age of 64 at the Asschafenburg Zigelberg Woman's Clinic through the method of in vitro fertilization, the daily Sabah reported yesterday.

Katıçelik attracted the attention of German media but has not appeared on camera. The baby's father, Selim, told the media that they named the baby Kayra. “My wife, Türkan, has been wanting to have a baby for years. She is delighted at the moment,” he added. It is reported that the egg cells of a 25-year-old woman living abroad were transferred to the mother.

Meanwhile, doctor Elias Karam said the mother and the baby are both in good condition and added that the birth technique used is prohibited in Germany. “Sooner or later they will allow the method of egg donation. Donation of sperm is permitted, yet the donation of eggs is not yet permitted,” Karam said. He added that Katıçelik is probably the oldest woman to give birth in Germany.

Last year, Memnune Tiryaki became mother at the age of 64 in northern Cyprus through the same technique, that is also prohibited in Turkey, the daily wrote.

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
