Well, I visited another midwife yesterday. Small practice, lovely lady, gorgeous birth centre with birthing tub available. Perfect. She said her last delivery was a 46 year old mother. No problems, no worries.

Question: Can you get pregnant after you go through Menopause?

Answer: No, BUT the woman had better make sure that menopause is complete. I know a few women who thought, because they had no periods for a few months, that menopause was over for them. SURPRISE! They got pregnant

Question: Can you get pregnant after you go through Menopause?

Answer: Once you have gone a FULL year - 12 months of not having periods you are through Menopause. Then, you are no longer able to get pregnant "naturally". However, this can take several years before you get to this point. Even if you skip 6 months... have a light period, and skip another 6 months... you are still considered peri-menopause.

During this time - you CAN get pregnant! And believe me... lots of women do! My grandmother had a baby at age 49 due to this misconception (pardon the pun). Also, you can get pregnant past menopause via IVF with medical assistance.

Not to mention the fact that even if the average woman started having children earlier, that wouldn’t necessarily reduce the number of babies born to women over 35, because women that age can get pregnant by accident.

Older women have been having babies for thousands of years, and even in the days when medical help was pretty much non-existent, most of them survived the experience.

Queen Victoria was gone 40 when she had her youngest child. My grandmother had her youngest child at 45. Hell, a friend of mine’s mother had twins at 43, entirely by accident (and of course, what with it being twins, everyone assumed she and her husband had been using fertility drugs rather than the Pill).

And count me in as choosing not to have kids after 35 (well, choosing not to have any at all, actually), because I don’t want to be like my mom, having her 11th child at the age of 45, and she’ll be ready to retire by the time he leaves home…

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
