50y moms not as rare as it once was

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Monday, August 20, 2007 | 0 comments

I don't know the statistics, but I suspect there must be a significant trend towards older parents. I bet that 50 year old mothers of small children is not as rare as it once was. Most of my peers are just starting to have kids now in their mid-30s, whereas when my parents married in 1970 at ages 27 and 28, they figured they'd better have kids quick since they were on the old side.

I believe that all children come from God. My husband's mother had her first at age 22, and her tenth at 45. She does admit that it was a lot harder when she was older taking care of a baby. However, she had many older children who were able to help out.

35 is certainly not too old to have a child. My grandparents were 44 when my mom was born.

First time pregnant, spontaneously, at 48! A year and a half of
fertility treatments and donor eggs didn't work. Got pregnant on our
honeymoon instead. Could have saved ourselves a lot of money, if only we knew that was the way to go!!

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
