I am 47 in July & my baby was born in March

Catherine McDiarmid-Watt | Friday, December 29, 2006 | 0 comments

Hi, I am 46 (47 in July) and my baby Clarisse was born on 2nd March, a very healthy girl despite the worry of my OB (I did not take the amnio). She was conceived naturally after a few cycles and the pregnancy went very well.

Now we are all blessed by her presence, our 4 older kids are so happy. I was in top physical shape when I got pregnant, very fit, having practiced karate 5 hours/week for 3 years. I think that helped me a lot.

There is the case of a Scottish lady who was reputed to have had six children after the age of 47, the last one at the age of 62.

According to the Gospel of James, which, though not part of the New Testament, contains biographical material about Mary considered "plausible" by some Orthodox and Catholic Christians, she was the daughter of Joachim and Anna.

Before Mary's conception, Anna had been barren, and her parents were quite old when she was conceived.

Yes, women in their 40's crowd fertility clinics these days. Yes, the odds of getting pregnant over 40 are slim. But recent statistics point up some lesser-known facts of mid-life: They are second only to "irresponsible" teenagers in the percentage of their pregnancies that are accidents.

Doctors and nurses who treat women in peri-menopause -- the transition to menopause -- say the moral is clear: Just because a woman's age makes her unlikely to get pregnant does not mean she's safe.

"They think they're calling it quits and the next thing you know, they're getting a surprise," he said. "It's not easy to get pregnant, but you still can get pregnant, and if you're not careful, you will get pregnant."

Dr. Lisa Lynn Sowder, 47, married at age 38 and soon learned pregnancy wasn't a given. After several rounds of in vitro fertilization, she gave birth to twin boys at age 40. Nearly four years later, after a surprise pregnancy, her daughter was born.

"My kids keep me young and make me old at the same time. Kids open you up to having fun again - I wouldn't own a baseball mitt if it weren't for my two boys."

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
