"We do have several patients who've had surprise pregnancies even in their 40's. I think there's a common misconception, and truly until you have not had a period in at least a year, you should still consider yourself fertile," said Dr. Erin Yu, Centennial Medical Centre.

They were almost as surprised as she to learn that at 43, after sending two daughters off to college, she was pregnant again. Andrea had just one ovary and, thinking pregnancy was not a big risk at her age, had been using only contraceptive foam.

Janet was 48 and a grandmother when a home test showed she was pregnant in the fall of 2003. She had been married to her second husband for about a year. He was 50; a baby was something neither had considered (she'd been using an IUD).

About Catherine: I am mom to three grown sons, two grandchildren and two rescue dogs. After years of raising my boys as a single mom, I remarried a wonderful man who had never had a child of his own. Unexpectedly, I found myself pregnant at 49!
Sadly we lost our precious baby at 8 weeks, and decided to try again. Five more losses, turned down for donor egg, foster care and adoption due to my age and losses - we have accepted there will be no more babies in our house.
